Spectacular wildlife and plantlife

Many species of antelope and large herds of Buffalo and Elephants are found in the delta. Predators such as Lions, Leopards and Wild Dogs are commonly seen. Many species of fish, including bream and tigerfish, are found in the waters of the Okavango. The Delta's plantlife is as spectacular as its wildlife with tall palm trees gracing the islands and reeds and papyrus lining the channels in the permanent delta. Underwater plants also thrive in the lagoons.

The diverse features of the Delta include marshes, rivers, flood plains and islands. Safaris are conducted in old-style dugout canoes, 4x4 vehicles, on horseback and from the backs of Elephants. The delta is also very rewarding for birdwatchers with species varying from region to region.

Excellent game-viewing during annual flood

The annual flood in the Okavango Delta peaks in the dry season. Traditionally game viewing in the Delta improves at high water as the animals are concentrated on the islands. When the water recedes animals concentrate on the floodplains where they feed on the new grass.

The peak season to visit the Okavango Delta is the dry season from April to October when the water is at its highest. The rainy season, generally from November to March, is the best time for birdwatching and seeing the beauty of the natural vegetation. Most animals in the Delta have their young during this bountiful time.

What I was witnessing was one of the marvels of the natural world – the annual flooding of the Okavango Delta …..”
